Message from the Head of School
Welcome to the UNSW Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical engineering is focussed on the development and application of engineering concepts and methods to provide new solutions to biological, medical and healthcare problems. Similarly, the vision of the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering (GSBmE) is to provide the best research and teaching outcomes relevant to the development of applications in the human health sector to help in the diagnosis, treatment and quality of life of Australians with life-threatening or debilitating diseases and conditions.
It is an exciting time to be involved in this field. Everyday there are reports of new exciting health technologies and on improvements in health and wellness due to improved diagnostics and therapies. A career in biomedical engineering is the path to take to be part of this multi-disciplinary effort. So come and join us in GSBmE! We are the first such School in Australia and indeed SE Asia, having recently celebrated our 40th anniversary.
It is an exciting time at the School with world class research being conducted across an extensive range of areas with 50+ PhD students actively working with our academic staff. These include medical bionics (bionic eyes), advanced biomaterials, stem cells, biomimetic scaffolds, regenerative medicine, cancer diagnostics, computational modelling of a range of physiological systems, and wearable and telehealth systems including the development of smartphone apps and data analytics for managing disease and wellness.
Our teaching activities concentrate on the Master of Biomedical Engineering program with intakes for people with both engineering and medical backgrounds. In addition the School’s dual degree in biomedical engineering (Bachelor of Engineering / Master of Biomedical Engineering) also continues to grow in reputation as an innovative and high quality educational program allowing undergraduate students to study Biomedical Engineering at a high level with more than 500 students currently enrolled in these programs.
Finally, if you require any further information about anything you have read on our website, please contact us.
