A novel targetted stimulation therapy for obstructive sleep apnoea

This project aims to develop and optimise a targeted stimulation system for alleviating obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), a major health issue impacting more than 9% of Australian adults. The PhD project involves developing methods to target specific upper airway muscle regions for stimulation to maintain airway patency in OSA. This approach will form the basis for personalised stimulation therapy for OSA. Development and testing of methods to identify regions of pharyngeal collapse using imaging, and to direct stimulation to these regions are the main focus of this PhD project.

This project requires an enthusiastic student with and undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or other engineering discipline with background in biomechanics &/or imaging, interest in, or experience with, medical device development, interest in sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnoea.
