Jacqueline Smith

B Materials Science Engineering/ M Biomedical Engineering

What drew you to the dual degree here?

I am fascinated by the human body and medicine, and I love the innovation and problem solving that biomedical engineering brings to that field. I also love maths and had an interest in science, so engineering was a good fit!

Tell us about the highlight of your course so far?

Going on international exchange. I got to study Materials Science at Iowa State University; one of America's top 15 universities in science and technology. I was also able to experience university life in America; playing in the marching band, living in an American college dorm, and travelling around the country. It has opened my eyes to the possibilities for overseas work and travel as a Biomedical Engineer.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future re career?

I hope to work with some of the great biomedical engineering companies both in Australia and overseas, to continue to push the boundaries of medical science, to explore and develop innovative solutions to real-world medical problems.

Got any tips for prospective biomed students?

Hang in there! First year engineering subjects can be tough, but biomedical engineering is a really interesting and inspiring area of study.
