I am Principal Engineer and Manager of the Water Research Laboratory (WRL) of the University of New South Wales. WRL is a leading international research and consulting laboratory utilising numerical modelling, physical modelling and field data collection to provide expert solutions in water engineering disciplines. As Manager and Principal Engineer, I am responsible for all industry research projects, financial operations, ongoing professional development of staff and the maintenance and development of WRL's techniques and facilities.

I am a physical and numerical water modelling expert. In my 27 years as a professional engineer, I have developed his skills on a broad range of projects providing assessment and solutions for water engineering and water resources investigations. I have particular expertise in the selection and application of appropriate models to support design solutions, planning and management across the water spectrum. Physical and numerical modelling projects have been undertaken using 1D, 2D and 3D hydrodynamic and water quality models.

I have specialist expertise in water resources management through a hands-on career investigating catchment processes. I am acknowledged by my peers as an expert in the application of numerical models to catchments and floodplains and was instrumental in the pioneering use of 2D hydrodynamic models for floodplain flow prediction and inundation mapping. My experience gained through direct participation in the evolution of floodplain modelling has provided me with an outstanding knowledge of the application and interpretation of appropriate numerical models to support environmental planning, management and forecasting for floodplains. I am a lead author and key contributor to the revision of Australian Rainfall and Runoff, most recently contributing to guidelines for appropriate use of 2D numerical models to floodplains. My recent research into the hazard and vulnerability of people and communities in floods has been integrated into the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience Handbook 7 Managing the Floodplain: A Guide to Best Practice in Flood Risk Management in Australia.
