8338 - Masters of Engineering Science Thesis Requirements

As part of the Masters of Engineering Science program there is a Thesis requirement that needs to be met before graduation. This includes the following courses:

  • Master’s Thesis A  - CVEN9931,
  • Master’s Thesis B  - CVEN9932 and
  • Engineering Postgraduate Coursework Research Skills - GSOE9010 or GSOE9011- (Distance version) Engineering Postgraduate Research Essentials (6 UOC). Students may also substitute GSOE9010 Eng PG Coursework Res Skills if they have advanced standing for their undergraduate research project for GSOE9220 Launching a Startup (6 UOC).

Please note that Master’s Thesis A & B are to be completed in two consecutive semesters. These are typically your final two semesters of your Masters of Engineering Science program.

As a student in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering you will fall under one of the following 3 categories:

  1. You have exemptions on your record that include ‘GSOE8312 – Enquiry based ‘. – This means you are already exempt and do not need to do complete a Thesis and do not need to complete Masters Thesis A & B. You will however still need to study the Engineering Postgraduate Coursework Research Skills course.
This can be viewed by logging on to www.my.unsw.edu.au > view the ‘student profile tab’> view academic statement.
  2. You may have exemptions on your record that do not include the above mentioned credits – This means you are not exempt and must complete Master’s Thesis A & B and the Engineering Postgraduate Coursework Research Skills course.
  3. You have not applied for any exemptions at the time of application. -  You may still be waived from completing Masters A & B.

If you fall under category 2 or 3 and want to be exempt please fill in the enrolment variation form in this link: https://www.engineering.unsw.edu.au/civil-engineering/student-resources/policies-procedures-and-forms/enrolment-variation-forms We will assess your eligibility and respond accordingly.

If you have completed a Thesis in your undergraduate studies or in a previous Master’s program, you may be exempt from Master’s Thesis A & B without shortening your program. If this is  this case. The 12UOC can instead be replaced by more coursework courses. (GSOE9010/9011 or GSOE9220 must be completed regardless of circumstance)

8621 - Master of Engineering Thesis Requirements

As part of the Masters of Engineering Program (Program 8621) there is a Thesis requirement that must be met. This includes the following courses:

Master’s Thesis A CVEN9931 & Master’s Thesis B CVEN9932

Please note that these courses are to be completed in your second year of study which are to be completed in two consecutive semesters. It is very important you begin looking for supervision well before the start of the selected semester you wish to commence your Thesis to ensure you do not run into any complications.

If you MUST complete a Thesis please see the form in the link below.
This will include all relevant information that you need to apply for a Thesis.

After reading the form carefully follow the below information to find a supervisor internally

Finding a Supervisor internally

Please note that our academic staffs are not obliged to supervise you. You must present yourselves to them and only if the academic sees there is genuine interest in their topics will they consider supervising you.
Please ensure you are always polite in your email. Do not ‘demand’ supervision, it should be a request.

Please follow the below guidelines when emailing academic staff

  1. Find a suitable topic in an area of your interest in Student Intranet
(Please note that this list of research projects may not be complete and that further thesis topics may be available)
  2. Look up academic staff ensuring their background and area of expertise is appropriate for your research
  3. Email the academic with the following information:
  • Explanation of your interest in the area
  • Education and work background
  • Request a meet time to discuss potential research topics. (If you are overseas and cannot meet before the start of semester arrange a skype chat.)

What your credit transfer means (only applicable to Program 8338):

At the time that you commence your studies, you may have asked for advanced standing. If so, you will see a record of this on your academic statement.

This can be viewed by logging on to www.my.unsw.edu.au > view the ‘student profile tab’> view academic statement.

If you are given 48UOC of exemptions, they will look like either of these:

  1. GSOE8124 – 24UOC Disciplinary Knowledge
    GSOE8524 – 24UOC Transfer credit
    OR
  2. GSOE8124 – 24UOC Disciplinary Knowledge
    GSOE8212 – 12UOC electives
    GSOE8312 - 12 UOC Enquiry based

If you fall under option 1, you are expected to complete the following:

  • 24UOC - specialisation courses (within the area in which you are studying)
  • GSOE9010 - Postgraduate Coursework Research Skills course
  • Master’s Thesis A & B – to be completed in consecutive semesters
  • 6UOC - Engineering and Technical Management course

If you fall under option 2, you are expected to complete the following:

  • 24UOC - specialisation courses (within the area in which you are studying)
  • GSOE9010/9011 - Postgraduate Coursework Research Skills course or GSOE9220 Launching a Startup
  • 6UOC - Engineering and Technical Management course
  • 12UOC – of electives, more specialisation courses and/or engineering and technical management courses

If you have been given 42UOC or less you are usually expected to also complete a prescribed course which is outlined in your offer letter. It is expected you complete these prescribed courses as soon as possible.

It is important to note that if you have been given advanced standing that does not include:

GSOE8312 - 12 UOC Enquiry based courses, and then you are expected to complete Master’s Thesis A & B (to be completed in consecutive semesters).

If you are unsure what your credit transfer means or would like to be considered for more, please contact cven.enquiries@unsw.edu.au for assistance.
