Surveying and Geospatial Engineering
Maps are very powerful. I truly believe that data can be brought to life when visualised through maps. That is what drives me and inspires me and what led me to decide to pursue further study.
My chosen area of research is considered quite multidisciplinary, as it uses geographic information systems to help in the planning and management of education resources in my country. It combines the disciplines of GIS, education, and infrastructure, so finding a path to take for the research took a lot of time.
Fortunately, because my doctorate is financed by the Philippine government, I wasn’t really restricted on where I could go but I did need to find a university and a discipline which could support my choice of thesis topic.
After researching my options, I decided on Surveying at UNSW School of Civil and Environmental Engineering because of its high worldwide rankings as well as the fact that I could complete my research within 3 years (whereas it was 4 years in the USA).
The other deciding factor was UNSW’s proximity to Sydney. Sydney is an amazingly family-friendly city, one of the best in the world I think. So that made being here with my young family much easier. In fact I gave birth to my third child in the second year of my PhD, so being in Sydney at UNSW was memorable for many reasons. It’s a time I will treasure.
