Advanced Standing, Exemption, Substitution
Advanced Standing (also called Transfer Credit)
Advanced standing reduces the overall duration of the degree.
Advanced Standing in a program may be approved when the student shows they have sufficient knowledge of the topic. The student will then be credited with course credits and advised of any relevant exemptions from their program, thus reducing the overall length of the program.
In all cases Advanced Standing can only be given for up to 50% of a program at the School's discretion, and will only be given under two conditions:
1. Internal - Advanced Standing (Transfer Credit)
Applies to some courses in the Master of Information Technology (8543, 5543, 7543) programs.
|COMP9020||Foundations of Computer Science|
|COMP9021||Principles of Programming|
|COMP9024||Data Structures & Algorithms|
|COMP9032||Microprocessors & Interfacing|
|COMP9331||Computer Networks & Applications|
|GSOE9820||Engineering Project Management *|
* Advanced standing (transfer credit) for GSOE9820 can be granted by the School upon sighting proof of prior studies or professional experience in this topic. An exam is not required.
It is not possible to apply for advanced standing if a student has previously attempted or remained enrolled beyond the census date in the course while studying at UNSW.
Students who articulate from a lower level program to a higher level program may elect to graduate from the lower level program. In all cases, courses completed as part of the lower level program are transferred to the higher level program to reduce the overall duration of the degree. I.e. students are given internal advanced standing (transfer credit).
Students applying for the MIT program stream will be assessed on application to determine whether they are eligible to take an online self-assessment to confirm their knowledge OR are required to take a formal exemption exam before Advanced Standing or Exemption can be granted.
Application: Students wishing to apply for Advanced Standing should submit the MIT Exemption Application (pdf).
2. External - Advanced Standing (Transfer Credit)
Applies to courses where the student has completed a course equivalent to a UNSW Computing course in their program at UNSW or another institution and has not used the courses toward another degree. External advanced standing (transfer credit) reduces the overall duration of the program.
Application: Students wishing to apply for external advanced standing (transfer credit) will be required to submit a UNSW Exemption/Advanced Standing Application Form and attach certified copies of course descriptions and academic transcript.
Exemption does not reduce the overall duration of the degree.
Exemption is used where the student has covered similar material in a course at this or another institution and is not eligible for advanced standing; or where a student does not wish to reduce the overall duration of the program, instead choosing to use their exemptions to waive pre-requisites for higher level courses.
Exemption generally applies to the waiving of compulsory program requirements or pre-requisite courses.
Application: Students wishing to apply for exemption from program requirements or pre-requisite courses will be required to submit a MIT Exemption Application (pdf) and attach certified copies of course descriptions and academic transcript. Students will then be assessed
Students may apply for substitution if a core or compulsory course is not available during the semester when they need to take it or if there is a timetable clash between two core or compulsory courses. A substitution will be approved if the School agrees that there is no other way for the student to complete degree requirements on time.
Application: Please contact the Student Office for details.
