Light up the night
As the sun goes down over Sydney Harbour, our Student-Led Projects team CREATE UNSW's latest creation will glow with pride in the Vivid Sydney 2017 Light Walk.
For the third year in a row, the dedicated and talented engineering Students from CREATE UNSW have been invited to exhibit at VIVID Sydney. This year’s creation, inspired by LA street artist Colette Miller, is an interactive, sensor-activated light display.
Their project, Crystallise, consists of a wall of light mosaic. When you interact with Crystallise, particular segments illuminate to adorn you with epic celestial wings.
Project lead and Electrical Engineering student, Winnie Zhang, said CREATE’s success is attributed to their collaborative approach which draws on the talents of students from all Engineering schools as well as other faculties. “This is a true multi-disciplinary project where we have civil and structural engineering students looking after the safety of the structure, electrical engineering students looking after the wiring and LED controls, software engineering students working out how to map the mosaic and efficiently control the lights, as well as students project managing the delivery”.
The technology used includes small micro-controllers and RGB LED modules often used in advertising boards. “The application of this technology can also be used in marketing billboards and staging special effects” Winnie says.
