Doctor of Philosophy (1640)

The Doctor of Philosophy is 4 years of advanced study, which involves a core coursework (GSOE9400) and research leading to the submission of an original thesis.

Entry requirements: a first or upper second class honours degree in engineering or a related discipline from a tertiary institution recognised by UNSW.

Master of Philosophy (2645)

The Master of Philosophy is a research degree with a coursework component taken over four sessions full-time (2 years) or equivalent.

The research component will lead to a thesis which embodies the result of an original investigation, design or engineering development.

A program of advanced study comprising 3 courses (18 Units of Credit) makes up the remainder of the program.


Entry requirements: completion of an appropriate 4-year undergraduate program, normally at honours level, with a minimum of honours II(1).

Completion of 4-years of a 5-year Masters program normally at “very good” level, with a minimum GPA of 3.2 or equivalent.

Note: where appropriate, relevant professional or prior research experience may also be taken into account by the Program Authority in recommending acceptance into the program.

A unique feature of the program is the provision for Oral Defence as part of the examination process. This will ensure rapid examination. Articulation from the MPhil to a PhD program is possible. Supervision arrangements must be confirmed before enrolment. Candidature may be either internal or external mode.
