Advanced Structures and Materials

Advanced structures and materials are just that, structures and materials that have gone beyond their current capabilities to have enhanced ,material properties (e.g. stronger, lighter, more rigid, more flexible), work more efficiently, last longer, or perform better. We investigate a wide variety of topics collected under three main areas:

    • Nano, Micro and Macro scale Modelling
    • Computational Analysis for Materials and Structures
    • Advanced Experiments on Composites

Atoms to Aeroplanes

Nano, Micro and Macro scale Modelling: We investigate micromechanical modelling approaches using the Onset Theory as well as modelling for damage behaviour of composites using full-field strain measurements. We also study molecular dynamics simulations for tailoring the properties of nano-composites.

Computational Analysis for Materials and Structures: We study fracture mechanics applications to growth and delamination in composites, finite element applications for laminated composite stiffened structures, functionally graded materials (FGM) and higher order theories, shape adaptive composite structures, and composite patch repair.

Advanced Experiments on Composites: We perform failure analysis of composites using acoustic emission and fibre bragg grating, thermoplastic composite welding and fatigue life of composites, and composites for crashworthiness.
