AusIMM SMI 2019
2019 AusIMM Student Meets Industry Night in Sydney shows a bright future for Minerals and Energy Resources Students.
On the 9th of April 2019, the AusIMM Sydney Student Chapter, supported by the AusIMM Sydney Branch and the University of New South Wales’ (UNSW) School of Minerals and Energy Resources Engineering hosted their first event of the year with great success. The evening was held in the Business Lounge on the UNSW campus in Kensington with sweeping views of Royal Randwick through to Sydney’s CBD.
The Student Meets Industry Night has become the premier industry networking event for Sydney-based students interested in a career in the mining and minerals sector. Industry engagement was at its highest yet with more companies in attendance than any previous years. Companies spoke over drinks and canapés with more than sixty students before a brief presentation from each sponsoring company about vacation and graduate opportunities. Representatives from BHP, Glencore, Fortescue, Byrnecut, Redpath, Barminco, Pybar and South32 were present during the event.
UNSW students made the most of the opportunity to speak directly with company HR representatives and get a head-start on the application process for the wide variety of vacation or graduate work opportunities available to Minerals and Energy Resources students. Technical industry representatives also shared their experiences about the exciting potential for a career in the mining and minerals sector and discussed the wide variety of paths that studying with the School of Minerals and Energy Resources Engineering can lead to.
A special thanks goes to the industry sponsors and the support from the AusIMM Sydney Branch and UNSW School of Minerals and Energy Resources Engineering, without whom the night would not have been possible. The AusIMM Sydney Student Chapter looks forward to sharing similar successes in their upcoming Young Professionals’ Dinner; details to be advertised soon.
“Sydney Branch of the AusIMM have been strong supporters of students at UNSW, with students being on our Branch Committee. We are always keen to assist with their career development and networking opportunities. As such I was pleased to be able to join UNSW students at their recent “Students meet Industry” night, held on the UNSW campus recently. It was pleasing to see that many of those companies that attended, used their UNSW Alumni for their presentations to the gathered students. A good time was had by all and I spoke to a number of attendees who thought it very worthwhile.” Bruce Fulton, Chair - AusIMM Sydney Branch.
