The UNSW School of Minerals and Energy Resources Engineering delivers high-impact research that supports a future of clean energy and sustainable resources. Our research focuses on interdisciplinary knowledge with alliances throughout the university, nation and the world. We offer a deep understanding in subject areas that span across earth sciences, artificial intelligence, geomechanics, internet of things, big data analysis, environmental engineering, digital rock analysis, space mining, sustainability and geothermal engineering.
Opportunities for both researchers and industry have never been so broad or fascinating in our scope. Each year, we work with our partners on multi-million-dollar projects that pursue investigations of national importance.
We collaborate with nearly all major mining and petroleum companies in Australia. Our key support bodies include the Australian Research Council (ARC), the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) and bespoke research projects for individual companies.
The School offers collaboration grants that promote the cross-pollination of ideas between the mining and petroleum engineering disciplines. These future-focused projects work across minerals, mining, energy resources and petroleum boundaries.
Our topic areas include ground support and ground control; geomechanics; sustainable mining practices and safety and systems engineering. Our research also emphasises multi-scale poromechanics, machine learning for rock characterisation and CO₂ sequestration as a means to reduce climate change.
