Mining Summer School takes to the road

UNSW Mining Engineering welcomed the annual Mining Summer School participants to the School on 18 January, 2017. Fifteen students from around the state gathered at the Kensington campus, ready to embark on their mining engineering experience. The students were given an introduction to the School and the mining industry, as well as a tour around campus to get a sense of what it's like to study at university. They experienced the School's newly developed virtual reality goggles, exploring mining sites and collecting the minerals needed to make virtual smartphones.

The program encouraged me to research mines and their operations, and I'm eager to join UNSW as soon as I can

The students, along with three UNSW academics and two recent Mining Engineering graduates set off for their field trip to the Central West of NSW. There, they toured surface and underground mines and learnt first hand from staff at Newcrest and Centennial Coal about the mining and minerals industry.  A stop-off at 'the Dish' at Northparkes provided some great photo opportunities too!

"The program allowed us to get a better understanding of the mining industry", said participant Ali Siddiqui from Amity College NSW. "Experienced teachers, graduates, workers and engineers, provided a detailed insight to the mining industry and the opportunities that come along with it. The program encouraged me to research mines and their operations, and I'm eager to join UNSW as soon as I can".

Students rated the underground tour of a mine as the most favoured highlight of the trip.  "Going underground and seeing the scale of the operations is mind-blowing" said one participant. Going on site provides the hands-on experience needed to help the participants make their future career choices.

As part of the program they also got to chat with professionals from the mining industry and recent UNSW alumni, giving students the opportunity to ask their questions one on one at the annual Alumni & Industry dinner.

The camp, sponsored by the AusIMM Education Endowment Fund, and subsidised by UNSW Mining Engineering, is held each January. For students in Year 10 and Year 11 interested in attending UMSS 2018, applications will open around September. For more information email the school at mining@unsw.edu.au.
