International acclaim for UNSW Engineering's Tyree building

UNSW’s energy technologies building honoured with the  prestigious S-lab award

UNSW Engineering’s Tyree Energy Technologies building has picked up another accolade, this time the prestigious S-Lab award in the “New Teaching and Mixed Use Laboratory Building” category.

The awards program is a global initiative that recognises best practice design and operation of laboratory facilities. The Tyree Energy Technologies Building-based lab was the only Australian project to be selected from a shortlist of over 40 international entries. Finalists in this category included entries from as far as Atlanta (USA), and Norwich (UK).

The awards ceremony was held in September at the S-Labs International Conference on Best Laboratory Practice and Building at the University of Leeds, United Kingdom. Emeritus Professor and former Dean of Engineering, Graham Davies, who now lives in the UK, collected the award on the University’s behalf and spoke of how the building inspires students and facilitates research on energy innovation.

Tyree is a landmark building on the UNSW Kensington campus, providing a gateway to the University and is an educational hub for undergraduate and postgraduate engineering students. As well as being a research facility, various industries are able to use the space to collaborate in the development and implementation of sustainable energy technologies. A roof-top area is set up for the testing of photovoltaic arrays, a key component of research in this prominent facility.

This was the fourth awards ceremony to be held by S-Lab, a not-for-profit initiative that is primarily funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).
