UNSW Engineering tops Australia in latest subject rankings

UNSW Sydney is number one in Australia for engineering and technology according to the 2020 Times Higher Education subject rankings.
UNSW Sydney has claimed Australia’s top spot for engineering and technology in the annual Times Higher Education (THE) World Rankings by Subject 2020, announced this week.
THE subject rankings highlight the universities that are leading the world in different subject areas. Judging criteria include learning environments, research reputation and influence and international outlook.
UNSW rose to the top of the table in Australia from third last year, overtaking the University of Melbourne and Monash University, now in second and third places respectively. Out of 1008 universities ranked globally, UNSW gained 12 positions this year to be placed 59th in the world. UNSW is now number one in Australia in engineering and technology across all major rankings – QS, AWRU, THE and also US News.
UNSW Dean of Engineering Mark Hoffman said the result is thanks to a deliberate effort by his faculty to focus on research that aims to solve the biggest challenges facing the world, and on an education to create excellent graduates with a global focus.
“UNSW Engineering is Australia’s largest engineering faculty and one of the biggest in the world. To see such a large number of academic and professional staff all focused on excellence in research and teaching and being recognised for that on a global stage is exceptional,” Professor Hoffman said.
UNSW also jumped 71 places in the world rankings for computer science to equal 79th, out of 749 universities ranked globally. This puts UNSW in third place for computer science in Australia, up five places from eighth last year.
“To be placed among the best in the country is fantastic. But for Australia’s Global University, being now well into the top 50 in the world across multiple rankings is really special,” Professor Hoffman said.
