Open Learning Program
The Open Learning Program offers high-level training to enhance the technical skills of professionals working in the upstream oil and gas industry through online learning (aka distance education).
The oil and gas industry has traditionally relied on 'on-the-job' training programs, supplemented by in-house and external short courses, to keep pace with the continuing introduction of new and advanced technology. However, the irregularity of working hours, family commitments and short or long-term assignments at remote locations means that for many professionals, traditional face-to-face education is simply not an option.
Therefore, the UNSW School of Petroleum Engineering offers formal online (distance) learning programs designed to produce the level of technical competence necessary for petroleum engineers, geologists and geophysicists to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and to apply the latest technological developments in a cost-effective manner.
All our Open Learning courses are internet based and delivered in a distance education format. Studying online means that, as long as you have access to the internet, you can study from anywhere in the world.
But studying online doesn’t mean you miss out on being part of a learning community. In our Open Learning Program you will interact with instructors and fellow students using our flexible online learning and teaching tools.
Further, we will send you the course guides and software necessary to complete the course. But providing our course materials and homework exercises in electronic format students can make the most effective use of their valuable time.
The study guides and software are designed to be self-contained to ensure that distance study is both effective and stimulating. Students are encouraged to go beyond the Study Guide material and make use of university and employer libraries and other publicly available information (such as textbooks, discussion papers, published papers). Students are required to participate in online discussion forums.
Courses are supported by state-of-the-art commercial software in:
- Reservoir simulation
- Well test analysis
- Reservoir characterisation
- Drilling and well design
- Economics and risk analysis
- Human resource management
- Environmental management
Students receive fully functional copies of all software required to complete their program of study. The learning experience is further enhanced by online interaction between participants with various levels of practical experience and expertise in a wide range of petroleum engineering disciplines.
We offer the following Open Learning Programs:
- Master of Engineering Science (16 courses)
- Graduate Diploma of Engineering Science (8 courses)
- Graduate Certificate of Engineering Science (6 courses)
All courses in the programs are delivered online. Features of the program include being designed in a manner that caters for those wishing to study externally in a part-time learning basis, particularly for professionals currently working in the areas of petroleum engineering, geology and geophysics.
Our current online learning students are working all over the world including:
- New Zealand
- South Africa
