“Being a woman of Chinese descent in software development/engineering, I have first-hand experience in seeing the lack of gender diversity in the technology sector. It can be extremely intimidating to be in a room full of male computer science engineers discussing technical solutions,” says Adelaine Ho, Head of Diversity, Inclusion and Technical Lead at hipages, an online marketplace that helps members of the public source tradespeople. hipages have partnered with media company NewsCorp to provide this UNSW Women in Engineering scholarship.
“The saying ‘You can’t be what you can’t see’ will resonate for some women; especially those who might be ready to start a family,” says Ho. “They are more likely to question whether they are in the right field.”
Since being appointed Head of Diversity and Inclusion at hipages, Ho says she has seen the vital importance of training and mentoring a pipeline of next-generation women engineers as well as encouraging more women, who are already in technology, to become role models. “Supporting the UNSW Women in Engineering scholarship program is one of many steps hipages are taking to ensure that we can move the 31% of women in digital jobs to 50% in the future.”
As a technology company, Ho says hipages deeply understands how diversity and inclusion allows innovation to truly blossom. “I always preach that diversity is hollow without inclusion. Having an inclusive work culture is vital for retaining a diverse team. For us, this scholarship is about helping provide the technology industry with skilled, work-ready graduates as well as guiding scholars in real-world learning experiences. UNSW have already done an amazing job in raising the percentage of women enrolling in Engineering degrees and we are very excited to be able to contribute to improving this further.”
