Opportunities for Industry and Alumni
Diversity in the workforce generates more ideas and stronger solutions. To attract high-achieving women to the UNSW Engineering, a number of scholarships are available to female high-school leavers. Women in Engineering (WIE) industry scholarships support undergraduate female students throughout their degree. These scholarships are open to women studying any engineering degree and provide successful applicants a stipend of $10,000 per year for the duration of their degree.
Scholarships have a huge positive impact on students. Scholarships recognise hard work and achievements, and provide encouragement and reinforcement of the positive impact that students can have in the community. The benefits of receiving a scholarship are abundant, including removing financial pressure, allowing participation in extra-curricular opportunities, improving job prospects, and building independence and responsibility.
For scholarship supporters there are also many benefits, including your organisation being promoted through multiple university channels to existing and prospective students, membership to the Industry Partnership Program (where you can regularly engage with current students) and invitations to UNSW Engineering events, where you can connect with high achieving students across all engineering disciplines.

Women in Engineering run a number of events throughout the year for both future and current female students. These include opportunities such as Women in Engineering Camp, Exploring STEM Careers Holiday Program, International Women’s Day and many more.

The Women in Engineering Student Society (WIESoc) runs a highly sought after Industry Mentoring Program, providing students with the opportunity to directly connect with industry representatives through one-on-one mentorship. The program officially runs from April to October where industry mentors will interact with mentees to provide the students with a deeper insight into their respective companies and professional environments.
As a mentor to UNSW female Engineering students you can:
- Share your passion for engineering
- Give back to the engineering community
- Share your professional experience
- Improve your mentoring skills
It is recommended that the mentors are able to spend fifteen hours from April to October 2019 as part of the Industry Mentoring Program. This is inclusive of attendance at 5 program events and five monthly meetings with your mentee.

At UNSW Engineering, we are committed to inspiring young women to pursue and continue a career in engineering.
For our new graduates, taking the next step and venturing into the workforce can be a daunting experience. This new mentoring program welcomes our newest female graduates to the alumni community by connecting them to seasoned alumni working in industry. We call it ENGage – a women in engineering initiative encouraging peer-to-peer networking.
As a Mentor, you will have the rewarding opportunity to further develop your skills, reflect on your career progression, share achievements, and inspire the next generation of female engineers.
As a Mentee, you will have direct access to practicing alumni to seek advice on how to navigate your new career, planning your career path or simply guidance on how to get started.
ENGage will take place over July – October 2020 online or via phone, with a minimum commitment of at least one conversation per month. Expressions of interest are now open for Mentors (all genders welcome) and Mentees (female only). Mentors must have at least 5yrs+ working experience. Applications close 20 June.

UNSW has an illustrious history of female graduates making a real difference in the world. They have been instrumental in developing new medical devices to creating engineering solutions that have improved accessibility to clean water and renewable energy. They have gone on to lead large organisations and governments, to improve lives in our society.
Our female engineering alumni regularly their stories to the future generations of female engineers, speaking at our events for high school and current engineering students or taking part in our mentoring program.
We believe it is important to showcase and celebrate female engineers. Currently UNSW Engineering awards stand-out female engineers through:
- The Ada Lovelace Medal, an annual award to recognise an Outstanding Woman Engineer
- The Judy Raper Award for Leadership
- The Maria Skyllas-Kazacos Young Professional Award for Outstanding Achievement
