UNSW Hyperloop

UNSW Hyperloop is a team of undergraduate engineering students from the University of New South Wales aspiring to innovate the future of high speed travel.

About UNSW Hyperloop

Who we are

UNSW Hyperloop is a group of 27 students aspiring to establish themselves as Australia’s front runner in hyperloop technology. UNSW Hyperloop was founded at the end of 2018 with the purpose of innovating the future of high-speed travel. As conceptualised by Elon Musk, the technology explores the potential for pressurised pod vehicles moving through vacuum tubes to travel at speeds twice that of planes with the added benefit of lower fuel consumption and increased safety.

With 2019 being our first year of developing a hyperloop pod, we intend on inspiring UNSW and its students to get excited and involved about innovating ways to create faster and better transport. With support from our university community we aim to expand our team and develop our pod for the years to come.

Major goals and achievements

After an intensive application process, extensive testing, and a rigorous interview conducted by SpaceX, UNSW Hyperloop has been formally selected to compete at the 2019 Hyperloop Pod Competition in Hawthorne, California this July. We will be pitted against 21 of the most revered engineering universities to create the fastest functional pod we can, while global media and the hyperloop community watches on.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for self-motivated students with a passion for transport and space. No matter your faculty or degree, we want people who can elevate UNSW Hyperloop. If you are interested in the technical side of things, we have a structures, electrical, dynamics, and software team. Alternatively, if your interested in the business side of our project, we have opportunities in marketing and sponsorships.

Why should you join?

Hyperloop offers incredible opportunities to students. By joining our team, you will:

  • The opportunity to contribute to the future of high-speed travel
  • Cultivate independence and confidence in your skills and abilities way beyond the boundaries of your degree
  • Develop new technical and interpersonal skills that will benefit your work in the project and in your career
  • Understand the breadth of how a company works by working closely with members from all of UNSW Hyperloop’s operations
  • Learn how to work in a multidisciplinary team working towards a shared goal
  • Apply the skills you learn in the classroom to real world situations with real world stakes
  • Gain global opportunities to learn, such as competing in SpaceX’s Hyperloop Pod Competition
  • Create industry contacts who are fascinated in your work in our project
  • Establish friendships for life, as you overcome challenges and achieve your goals as a team
Information for Sponsors

Can you help?

We are actively seeking sponsors to help us achieve our goals of training Australia’s top engineers, shaping the future of sustainable transport and inspiring the next generation of engineers still in school. Any support, whether it be in-kind material or machining, financial support or advice on our designs, is invaluable.

If you are interested in sponsoring any of our Student Projects, please contact our Student Projects Officer Stephanie Bagnell engprojects@unsw.edu.au
