Postgraduate Coursework Degrees

Master of Engineering

Entry is open to students with a three or four year Bachelor of Engineering degree that is equivalent to the first three years of an accredited Engineering degree in a related discipline with a minimum 65% average (70% for Electrical and Telecommunications).

(Applicants who hold a three year Engineering Science degree at least equivalent to the first three years of a related Engineering degree accredited under the Washington Accord may be considered also.)

Master of Engineering Science

Students need a recognized four year Bachelor of Engineering degree or a Graduate Diploma in a related discipline of engineering with a minimum 65% average.

Master of Information Technology 

  • At least a four year undergraduate degree equivalent to a standard Australian bachelor degree in science or engineering, and a 70% average achieved overall OR
  • a three year undergraduate degree equivalent to a standard Australian bachelor degree in computer science and engineering, and a 70% average achieved overall OR
  • completion of the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology (5543) subject to no fails.

Advanced standing or exemption can be granted in the MIT for cases where core courses were completed in a prior program.  Advanced standing is possible for up to 50% of the program only.


Country and regional specific admission requirements

British students 

Students with three year British degrees are eligible to apply for UNSW Engineering's postgraduate programs. However, applications will be considered on a case by case basis and outcomes are dependent on GPA and discipline background of the student. 

NOTE: Students accepted with 3 year degrees will not be granted Advanced Standing for UNSW Engineering Masters programs and must complete the full 2 years of Masters study.

Chinese students

Students from a non-211 university in China need a minimum 70% average (for both the Master of Engineering Science and Master of Engineering, with 75% average required for the ME in Electrical/Telecommunications streams).


South Asian students

Students who have a degree from an institution in IndiaPakistanBangladeshNepal or Sri Lanka have varying grade point average (GPA) requirements based on the institution at which they completed their undergraduate degree. The minimum needed is either 65%, 75% or 80% depending on the previous institution. (NOTE: The minimum average required for entry is as determined by the UNSW Postgraduate Entry Score Calculator which adjusts for the pass mark of your institution.)

Students from institutions not listed below will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

(Entry requirements for the Master of Engineering 8621 program in Electrical Engineering or Telecommunications will be 5% higher in all cases.)
