What's it all about?

■  This broad profession is responsible for projects that enhance the overall quality of life. They design, construct, manage, operate and maintain the infrastructure that supports modern society. This includes buildings, bridges, roads, tunnels, airfields, dams, ports and harbours, railways, new mines, water supply and sewerage schemes, irrigation systems and more.

What does it include?

■  This highly sought after UNSW degree provides students with an excellent grounding in civil engineering fundamentals and applications. You’ll study structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, transport engineering and water engineering, as well as construction and management. In your fourth year, you can specialise through a full suite of electives.

Where will you work?

■  Civil Engineering is very broad and affords opportunities for involvement in many specialist activities. Students investigate, plan, design and manage projects, in the office and in the field. Civil engineers are employed in specialist consulting firms, construction companies, large public companies, government organisations that construct, manage and maintain public utilities, and in financial and management consultancies.

MATH1141Higher Maths 1AStudents have the option to enrol in either MATH1131 or MATH1141. MATH1141 covers the same topics as MATH1131 but in greater depth. Assumed knowledge for MATH1141: Students will be expected to have achieved a combined HSC mark in Mathematics Extension 1 and 2 over 175.
PHYS1121Physics 1AAssumed knowledge: HSC Physics and Mathematics Extension 1 or equivalent. Students that are highly competent in physics may instead enrol in PHYS1131.
PHYS1131Higher Physics 1ACovers the same content as PHYS1121, however features more advanced assessment.
ENGG1000Engineering Design and InnovationA team project over a ten week period to solve a practical problem. The key skills developed include concept development, critical thinking and evaluation skills.
